Accident in South of Iceland: Two passengers were taken to hospital by helicopter

Yesterday, the Icelandic Coast Guard helicopter rushed to an emergency in South Iceland. A car had flipped near Kirkjubæjarklaustur around 8 pm.

Five people were in the car. Two women needed helicopter evacuation to Landspítali Hospital in Reykjavík. Luckily, the others could exit the car on their own.

Frí­mann Bald­urs­son, Chief of Police in South Iceland, shared details with mbl.is. He said the accident happened near a blue dot on the map. This spot is on Suðurlandsvegur Road, between Skaftártunga Road and Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

The helicopter was sent as a precaution. One woman had head injuries. It’s unclear how severe the other woman’s injuries were. Sadly, the car was badly damaged and declared a total loss.

The remaining passengers, not needing hospital care in Reykjavík, were taken to the local health care center in Kirkjubæjarklaustur. There, they were reported to be in stable condition.
