Yesterday, the Icelandic Coast Guard helicopter rushed to an emergency in South Iceland. A car had flipped near Kirkjubæjarklaustur around 8 pm.
Five people were in the car. Two women needed helicopter evacuation to Landspítali Hospital in Reykjavík. Luckily, the others could exit the car on their own.
Frímann Baldursson, Chief of Police in South Iceland, shared details with mbl.is. He said the accident happened near a blue dot on the map. This spot is on Suðurlandsvegur Road, between Skaftártunga Road and Kirkjubæjarklaustur.
The helicopter was sent as a precaution. One woman had head injuries. It’s unclear how severe the other woman’s injuries were. Sadly, the car was badly damaged and declared a total loss.
The remaining passengers, not needing hospital care in Reykjavík, were taken to the local health care center in Kirkjubæjarklaustur. There, they were reported to be in stable condition.
